Kitchen Shears: The Must Have Tool For The Kitchen
Shears are basically another name for scissors. A type of scissor that is generally intended for a specific use. Some shears are to trim the hair on a sheep and others for cuisine such as preparing chicken or turkey. Other types of sheers include pruning sheers used in the garden, tin snipers for cutting thin sheets of metal to name a few.
The basic difference of sheers of any type over scissors is that its generally constructed from heavier metal therefore it's a little more heavy duty than regular scissors and they tend to be bigger than ordinary scissors. Scissors by definition are maximum 6 inches in length.
Another physical difference between scissors and shears is that because shears are designed for heavier use the fulcrum has been changed to give the cutting more leverage, thereby making it easier. Unlike scissors many models of shears come with removable blades, which is good because you can just replace the blades rather than buying new pairs of sheers.
Although scissors have been used since the ancient Egyptians it was not until 1761 when a British gentleman by the name of Robert hinchliffe invented a pair that resembles the modern day scissors. It was so successful that it became mass produced. Later on in the 19th century scissors were made to look like pieces of art by giving it an ornate finish.
In the 20th century a number of different shears for several different uses came about and one such product was the kitchen shear. This particular type of shear is very popular with cooks and chefs for its effective cutting prowess, being able to cut through poultry and other food items with ease. There are even ones designed for left handed cooks and even ambidextrous ones.
