How To Care For Silver Cutlery
If you have silver plated cutlery, then you most definitely want to take care of it properly. Not only do many people have this type of cutlery, but quite often the pieces are very meaningful. They may have been wedding or anniversary gifts, or passed down through the generations. For these reasons and many others, it is absolutely vital for you to know how to take care of the pieces. You may well want to keep it in the family, after all, by passing it down to your children. In that case, you need to know how to keep it sparkling, shining, and beautiful, and we are going to help you!
Silver is something that tarnish loves and it is something that is bound to happen if you are not careful with how well you are taking care of and how you are cleaning your silverware. There are however, a number of different ways that you can remove tarnish and that is what we are going to talk about.
The way you treat your cutlery is quite important as well. For instance, it is best to put on gloves made of latex when generally handling them, to protect the silver from the oils in your fingers. Naturally, this does not apply for when you are using the pieces. It is also a good idea to carefully wash the pieces as quickly as possible once you have finished using them. Every bit of residue needs to be cleaned off of them.
You also want to make sure that you are considering exactly what you are washing your cutlery with. For example, you do not want to scratch it all up and using any abrasive pads or abrasive substances might actually scratch the silver.
Lemon is something that you want to avoid whenever you are washing silver as well, because most cleaners that have lemon in them actually have lemon juice in them and what lemon juice can do is actually corrode the silver because of the acid that is in it.
Now, more often than not, even with silver cutlery, the knives in the sets will generally be made of stainless steel instead. Do not think that means you can scrub them to death or use those abrasive or lemon juice based cleaners. Steel can stand up to far more than silver, but it is best not to get into the habit.
Finally, after you have cleaned your silver plated cutlery, the next step is going to be to polish them. You want to make sure that you polish them at least once or twice a month, that way you can certainly make sure that they look beautiful. One thing to note is that you do not want to polish the parts you are using to eat, as the polish can actually stay on the silverware and it will make your food taste horrible.
