Do Not Forget About Your Kitchen Blender

Many people own a blender that simply is not being used. It is not because the blender is not a useful tool, it is because we often buy these inexpensive machines for one use and when we do not need them for that use any more, they get pushed to the back of the cabinet and forgotten. Check under your cabinets and see if there is not a blender hiding there.

It is time to dig that blender out to use it for some of the following ideas.

Blenders are great for making baby food. Place small quantities of foods you cook for your other family in the blender and puree for baby. Avoid spicy foods, but soups, stews and vegetables are usually safe bets. By preparing your own baby food, you know exactly what is going into that little one's mouth. If your baby has allergies, you can be sure that you avoid those foods.

Make your own fruit smoothies. Just add some fresh fruit into the blender and blend. Add a few ice cubes, sugar or artificial sweetener and milk. Blend everything up and serve for a tropical treat.

Grind coffee beans. Somewhere along the way, we have got the idea that it takes a special appliance for every task. A blender on the low setting makes a great coffee grinder. Fresh ground coffee has that great taste of all those wonderful coffee shops. Be sure not to blend too long or you can burn your coffee beans.

Blenders also make great spice grinders. Freshly ground spices are much more intense in flavor so you may need to adjust your recipes. Black pepper, nutmeg and cloves are some of the whole spices that can be ground freshly.

You can use your blender to chop nuts. A short blend time will give coarsely ground nuts, a few more seconds gives the fine ground variety. If you want fresh peanut butter, then try making your own in the blender. Add a some roasted peanuts and grind until they turn into peanut butter. Add a few peanuts after the butter forms and grind a little longer for chunky peanut butter.

Use the blender to make fluffy omelets or scrambled eggs. Just break the eggs into the blender and let the stainless steel blades whip air into the eggs.

Perfect gravy without any lumps is made possible by blending the finished product. Be sure that your blender has a glass container and do not fill over the half way mark to prevent overflow.

Yes, blenders still are great for that occasional mixed drink too. For margaritas or pina coladas, you have to have a blender. Virgin versions will be appreciated by those who do not or cannot drink alcohol. Kids will enjoy slushes made by freezing juice in ice cube trays. Blend the cubes of frozen juice with non-frozen juice.

To remind yourself to use that blender more often move it out where you can see it on the counter top. Then as you are cooking or preparing snacks, you can be reminded that this is one of the most useful tools in the kitchen. Clean up is a snap, just add hot water and a few drops of detergent. Blend on high for a few minutes and rinse. On occasion, you may need to disassemble the blender container to clean.
